Yes, alpacas can also be used as pets, lawn mowers or livestock guardians.  These alpacas are often castrated males, or females who are not able to breed.

At Fleur de Lys alpacas, we will endeavour to help match the personality of the alpacas to the requirement of their new owners.  For example, if you are needing livestock guardians, then a smaller, slightly shy alpaca would not be the best one for the job you want them to do.  Instead, we would suggest a bigger, stronger, perhaps not so friendly alpaca would be better to keep the foxes away from your lambing ewes.

As alpacas are herd animals, we won’t sell an individual alpaca without knowing it would be joining others of its own kind on your property.  We would suggest a minimum of three alpacas, preferably four, as the minimum herd size, whatever role they are to fulfil on your farm.

For those with large flocks of lambing ewes, we can provide wethered alpacas as herd guardians for you.  We are happy to pass on the advice and experience we have learned from broad acre sheep farmers about the best way to utilise alpacas to optimise your lamb survival rates.
